Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. All students will receive explicit SEL instruction using the Second Step curriculum.
Additionally, our district-wide SEL department has carefully selected Books of the Month. Our first SEL Book of the Month for August is Be Kind by Pat Zietlow Miller. In a world of turmoil and confusion, we begin the school year with a story of one girl’s contemplation of what it means to be kind. Building relationships is more important now more than ever and this moving and thoughtful story explores what a child can do to be kind, and how each act, big or small, can make a difference--or at least help a friend.
